What are these people thinking about?

By "people" I mean studio executives in Hollywood. Have you paid your ten dollars lately to see the latest hundred million dollar movie and left the theater thinking, "What the hell?" Story lines with more holes than the comedy of Bob Saget. Alleged comedies with some lanky idiot drinking milk from the udder of a cow? Horror movies that wouldn't scare a nine year old alone on Halloween eve? More money goes into making these films then the gross national product of some countries and they can't seem to find any original or somewhat good ideas. I find it impossible to believe there is such a dearth of quality screenwriters out there. Producing quality films requires movie executives that can spot good talent and let them run with it, not changing the ending because some test audience didn't like it or letting a stand up comedian develop (or not develop) a plot.

A focus group is fine if you are trying to get advertising ideas or test out a new mint, but when it comes to entertainment -- give me a freaking break! Some schlub getting twenty bucks to be yanked away from shopping is going to tell me how to end my film? Did Matisse ask a mechanic what colors he should use in his latest painting? Writers are artists. Novels are art. Stage plays are art, as are screenplays and teleplays. They all become part of the fabric of our past, upon which new ideas are built upon and taken further. To take the pen out of the writers hand and give it to someone wandering the mall is not only ludicrous it is disgusting.

Just because someone is an actor or comedian does not mean that they are writers. Yes some people are multi-talented and able to do both, but they are few and far between. Making films is a lot like building a house. You can build it solid, or just slap it together. You wouldn't let the electrician install the plumbing, unless he KNEW how to do both. Let the writers draw up the blueprints, and let the actors do what they do best, dress the windows. And for God's sake let the people in the mall do what they are there to do, SHOP.

Thanks for listening,
