X-MEN: UNITED

A new installment of the X-Men is upon us and it guarantees not to disappoint. Back are the same familiar faces such as Cyclops (James Marsden), Jean Grey (Fake Janssen), Storm (Halle Berry), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen) and of course, Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Added to the mix this time is Iceman, Colossus and Pyro. I’m pretty sure I saw Jubilee in there as well. The cast, as like in the movie of 2000, work seamlessly together, in an interweaving of story line, special effects and humor.

The movie delivers on action, no worries there. From a murder attempt on the president’s life to Magneto making a wondrous escape form his plastic exile, there are far and few between slow parts to this new story-line. And as we all know, the storyline is most important to any film. X-Men United could have easily been weighed down, ruined and bogged down by senseless special effects, yet, it was not. Instead, the director (Bryan Singer) chose to take the high road. The special effects were peppered throughout the movie where needed yet never stole the scene form dialogue or the story telling.

This film for the most part, as the title describes, was a united effort between the X-Men and Magneto. Their effort to thwart a military foe, William Stryker (Brian Cox), bent of ridding the world of mutants after Professor X was unable to “cure” Mr. Stryker’s own son of his mutant abilities. He draws information from Magneto that allows him to infiltrate Professor Xavier's school for mutants and gain access to Cerebro. From there, it is a scramble to defeat Stryker before his plan can be completed.

If United is a looking glass into what we can expect from future installments of the X-Men, I'm in line right now.
