Punch Drunk Love

Punch Drunk Love is a far cry from what we have come to expect from Mr. Sandler in the past couple of years—this is a good thing, trust me. Adam Sandler took a risk on this film, a risk which I believe will win him some much needed accolades in Hollywood. His character manages to be depressing, comical, nervous and vulnerable all at the same time.

Sandler, who plays a quasi-businessman, finds himself hunted by four thugs sent after him after he refused to give a phone sex operator money to pay her rent. Well written and acted scenes between Sandler and the boss of the phone sex business, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the interaction between him and his 7 mentally abusive sisters, are just two of the driving forces in this movie.

His love interest, Emily Watson, lures Sandler into her life, and allows him his eccentricities and wild behavior. Almost being killed by the four phones sex thugs, only brings Sandler and Watson closer together.

Not the smash hit of the year, but a hit for Sandler.
