OLD SCHOOL At first glance, I did not want to see this movie. I figured it was going to be a disaster, one in the long line of bad movies Will Ferrell would sign up for, post Saturday Night Live days. However, I was wrong. I left the AMC Theatre in Burbank amused, laughed out and pleasantly surprised. Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson (the only Wilson brother who is worth a damn) and Vince Vaughn, play early 30, ex-frat guys trying to relive their drinking youth by forming an unofficial fraternity; in a loose reaction after Luke Wilson’s girlfriend cheated on him in a series of gang-bangs and other sexual experimentations. The three create the fraternity and draft anyone from a three hundred pound college freshman to a 90-year old ex-Navy man named “Blue”. From beer funnels to KY Jelly wrestling you would think this movie was destined to be chalked-up simply as three actors coming together cause they have money and connections. The “story-line” actually held up and you left knowing you laughed a good laugh. Included in the cast is one of my favorite comedic actors, Jeremy Piven. He plays the Dean of the local college, and once punch line in his college years for Wilson and Vaughn. After finding out that his Wilson has moved into a house, which resides on his college campus, he does everything within his power to have him, and the frat, removed. Along with Piven, Craig Kilborn makes a small appearance as womanizer and Any Dick as a blowjob instructor. You’ll get the usual loud, naked, in your face comedy from Ferrell, the machinegunesque banter from Vaughn (a la Made and Swingers) and an impressive effort from Wilson, who was the calm, and somewhat stable character throughout the entire film. If you simply want to laugh, leave your brain at the door, see Old School. You won’t be disappointed. |
