Insomnia

Al Pacino takes on the role of a sleep-deprived cop sent to investigate the murder of a small town teenage girl. Set in Alaska, Pacino’s character meets up with a local writer, Robin Williams, who is the prime suspect in the teen’s murder.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, Insomnia definitely held my interest, yet, I felt where Pacino’s ability as an actor was tapped sufficiently, Williams seemed to be held back by something or someone. True, he is the king of improv and what-will-he-do-next antics, yet even though the movie is a drama, the Williams talent was far from utilized. If you are fortunate enough to have Robin Williams at your disposal, even if the role is not a comical one, use his gift. Allow him to morph beyond the script, beyond the expectations.

Insomnia is defined as: an inability to sleep, chronic sleeplessness. The Pacino character was literally taken by surprise by the constant daylight in the small Alaska town. It affected his judgment, answers and above all, his ability to adequately perform as a cop. However, in any good movie, the title is a mere looking glass into the movie, yet, does not overtake the movie and become the main subject. Insomnia had a very good balance between the two.

In my opinion, if you are either an Al Pacino or Robin Williams fan, see Insomnia. And if you look very hard, you can almost see a hint of Michael Corleone peeking through.

Also appearing is Hilary Swank: Boys don’t cry & Nicky Katt: Boston Public.
