Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd

Dumb and Dumberer, code named: When Harry Met Lloyd, is set in 1986 when we are allowed to meet Harry And Lloyd (Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson) as High School seniors. They are scammed into a “Special Needs” class run by the principal, Eugene Levy, so the school will be given a $100,000 grant. Which of course the principal intends to steal and run away with the school’s lunchroom lady.

Let me first say that I loved Dumb and Dumber. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels brought to life two of the most hilarious, original and at the same time brain dead characters any of has ever seen. For this new installment I can only use the word brain dead. The actors playing the young mentally challenged duo did a favorable job, however. A movie full of silly dialogue, dead jokes, and an oddly placed song where Lloyd’s father, Luis Guzman, the high school’s custodian, explains the rules of love to his son while driving around on floor polishing machines, did little for me.

And why have Eugene Levy in this film? Other to use his name to sell the film, the man that was once part of SCTV had his talents wasted being part of this project. Cheri Oteri played the school’s lunchroom lady slash “Special Needs” program teacher slash principal’s love interest. Albeit somewhat on the funny side, she should try something different one of these days.

In all, to all you Dumb and Dumber fans, it was a cute movie (yes, you heard me, I said cute) but I would not run to your nearest movie theatre in June and hand over nine of your hard earned dollars, instead, a nice brisk walk will suffice. One of the highlights in the film was an interesting, and surprising, passionate kiss between Mimi Rogers, playing Harry’s mother, and Rachel Nichols, playing your standard pretty girl who somehow dismisses all of the annoying and disgusting traits of Mr. Dumb and Mr. Dumberer.

In the movie's defense, the reason the original worked so well was directly because of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Without them, the film falls short. Even though the movie is not complete, and will not be released until June, I'm not sure this will be near the success of its big brother.
