Catch Me If You Can

The story surrounds FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Hanks), pursuing the always morphing Frank Abagnale, Jr. (DiCaprio) in a wild ride that spans throughout the US to Europe. Abagnale, a master of deception, worked as a doctor, a lawyer and as a co-pilot for a major airline, all before his 18th birthday. Also a brilliant forger, Abagnale finds himself hunted by Hanratty, yet somehow is able to keep himself one step ahead, leaving hints and clues along the way, baiting Hanratty to continue his pursuit.

Catch Me If You Can is much more than a long car chance sequence, as the storyline goes much deeper than Hanratty making it his one and only quest to capture Abagnale. The film paints a picture of a troubled Frank Abagnale, Jr. coping with his fathers’ woes (Walken) with the IRS and his failure as a businessman. In reaction to his parent’s divorce, Abagnale runs away, and transforms himself into a master of deception, in return, attempts to buy back everything the IRS, and partially his mother, stole from his father.

It’s worth pointing out, if you did not already know this, but Catch Me If You Can is a true story. Steven Spielberg, of course, took some liberty in the story line; however, it just goes to show you what one man can do if properly motivated. Spielberg wanted to show events from every angle and to its completion, which makes for a long movie. Don’t despair though, it does pay off in the end, when after finally being caught by Hanratty, Abagnale goes to work for the FBI in their check fraud department.

Sit back and enjoy the ride. If Hanks is your pleasure or you have a hankering or Leo, this is your film.
