Adaptation

From the minds that brought us Being John Malkovich, comes another twisted and adventurous film starring Nicholas Cage, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper. Adaptation allows us to delve into the mind of a screenwriter, played by Cage, hired to create the screenplay for the not so mainstream book The Orchid Thief.

Cage plays a brilliant, yet, neurotic, self-deprecating and shy screenwriter who is unable to siphon a story out of a book concentrating mainly on orchids. He is tormented by his inability to write and thinks himself worthless when he is weeks overdue to deliver the first draft to his agent. What starts out as a painful process becomes even worse when Cage’s twin brother enters the picture and has the revelation that he wants to become a screenwriter as well. His twin is out-going, fun, sexual and unfortunately, a better writer than his brother.

Meryl Streep plays the author of the book The Orchid Thief. A well-known and respected writer at The New Yorker, she finds herself absorbed into the life of a seemingly putrid horticulturalist that is the fore most expert on orchids, played by Chris Cooper (American Beauty, October’s Sky, The Bourne Identity).

The movie takes unusual and always tight turns throughout the film. Meryl Streep shows her true acting talents and just how far she is willing to go for her character development and especially for the film. This is unlike anything she’s done before.

If you have little patience for a deep movie, or was deciding between Adaptation and Maid in Manhattan, do not see this movie! The rest of you, enjoy.
